Strasbourg calls itself the Capitale de Noël, and its Christkindelsmärik, first held in 1570, is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. Instead of one big market, the Alsatian capital spreads around 300 stalls across a dozen squares, from Place Broglie and the cathedral square to Place Kléber, where a giant Christmas tree towers over the shoppers.
Look for Alsatian bredele biscuits, gingerbread and vin chaud made with Alsace wine. The whole Grande Île is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so the walk between markets is half the fun. Expect bag checks at the entrances to the old town.
